Texturing can be seen as being very long winded and boring. But without a good texture, it can leave beautiful modelling looking very average. So time is expected to be spent on this stage. Following on from the end of last year in the game art module where their was tons of texturing to be done, after the initial unwrapping of the mesh, It is all trial and error working between Photoshop and Maya. You would be extremely lucky or very experienced to come out with a nice texture after one attempt in photoshop. I think I came in and out of photoshop with the main texture of the body around 20 times. This way mainly working with trying to reduce seam marks on model and also trying to find a texture I was happy with. In the end I went for a fleshy sort of texture to really make him look 'Alieny'. I done a bit of work using the dodge and burn tool in photoshop on the UV Map to the the texture a bit more life, for example darkening around the eyes, mouth etc.

Below are the UV Maps for the Alien. Again after the end of last year a lot of this was still quite fresh to me. It was only shapes like the head and hands which I had to spend a little bit more time on to get right. Instead of unwrapping the hands which I didn't have much luck with, I cut the thumbs away from the hands themselves and then took two separate projections, one from above and one from below. I then stitched the correct UV Edges together to make it easier to apply the texture in Photoshop.
