More RAW Tests (On Location)

To really see the potential on Magic Lantern RAW, we decided to go to a location that would be similar to the location we want to end up filming our DCM brief. The tests before we worked with a person and natural light so this time we wanted to see how it copes with a high detailed shot. The shot above really shows just how much detail we are getting out the camera. Unfortunately we haven't got a h264 version but from being a user of a DSLR for around 4 years, I have never seen image quality quite like it. The only negative we did pick up on was the colour noise. Colour noise is something that I completely bypassed as it is something I don't see being colour blind. This is one reason Luca and Lija will be sitting next to me when it comes to the colour grading stage.

Below is just a little clip that Luca tested out some colour grading on. This was also shot in RAW and again the detail is just ridiculous coming out of a £1200 4 year old DSLR. Detail and sharpness is what we want to really push that cinematic look for both DCM videos and our short film. The only down side to this RAW function in Magic Lantern is that the highest resolution you can shoot at is 1880, so not quite full HD. The advantage of hiring a cinema camera is that you can have that 4k option which means 1, image quality will be outstanding and 2, when submitting for the competition, you will have that 4k option available for them. Also shooting in 4k and working on a 1080 timeline gives you that flexibility when recomposing in the edit. 4k is 4x the resolution of full HD so on that timeline you will be able to zoom in an awful lot before you start loosing quality.
