Sound

One of the most important things in this short film is the sound, because of the lonely quiet world that U-1 lives in the sound that is around him and the sounds that he and his companions make is really important in setting the mood and the emotions we are expected to empathise with. Also as U-1 interacts completely silently, the sounds of his world and even the subtle sounds of his body language and movements become an incredibly important factor of diegetic sound.

The small subtle sounds of movement help emphasis how quiet U-1 is, how sad and timid he is. The small sounds of movement only exaggerate the silence that U-1 lives in and increase the isolation where pure silence might not achieve the same.

For our on set shoot, the controlled set allowed us to take the boom mic to the fullest, picking up all the small sounds of movement which would echo around the small quiet home. On the location shoot we took the boom mic, but the background noise and also the bustle of the junkyard was a more important factor and it was only loud sounds such as clanging and sorting which were wanted to capture.

Making a soundscape for the outdoors involved playing up sounds rather than just using the sounds we picked up from the location. There was also the sounds of JENNY, which needing sound sculpting, mixing noises from freesfx to make all the electronic and industrial noises.

Because of using the zoom recorder and not going into the camera syncing sound with video was a job in itself.
