It is fair to say that I have never been a big reader. Reading has always been something that I have avoided, even through school and college. I have always been more of a hands on sort of person, I always preferred looking at the photos in a magazine rather than reading the actual text and I would always pick a film over a book. I do think this has had an effect on my literacy skills so I thought to myself, now is the right time start reading.
My girlfriend is an avid reader, so she bought me a book to get me started which was 'The Odessa File' by Fredrick Forsyth. I told her the sort of things I am interested in, one of them being stories relating to war. The Odessa File is about a German journalist working after the Second World War and his discoveries whilst investigating the suspected suicide of a holocaust survivor. I have gone on to purchase Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as a gift for my girlfriend, however, I fully intend on reading it once she has finished! I also bought myself Life of Pi. I watched the film at the cinema and thought it was fantastic. I heard people saying that it was a book that could ever be a film, this made me want to read it even more. I was intrigued as to how Ang Lee had brought the book to life and how the descriptions in the book compared to the scenes in the film.
I think this could be an important skill to take into my role as a film maker because I do feel that stories, context and language are one of the most important parts of film making. Script writing is something that I would not be 100% confident with at this moment in time but I think if you are someone who reads a lot of books, your story writing ability and vocabulary would be a lot better than someone like me who has never been a big reader.
glad to see your on the books, where the hell did you get that copy of alice in wonderland. its so pretty!
