Having received some very strong concept work from Lija, I was really looking forward to sticking the T-poses into Maya and getting it modeled. Again I went for a stylised character which is something that I am very comfortable with modelling. I would be able to keep it low poly which again is something I am usually good at doing which mean my rendering time won't be that long. I did think that modelling this character would be straight forward but I came across a couple of little tricky areas such as the hood and the dreadlocks. Ideally I wanted to get the polys flowing nicely around the front of the hood but I had a few working there way out of place which meant I had to delete a few faces and re-shape the hood to get it how I wanted it.
As my model is relatively symmetrical, I used the method of modelling half and then mirroring the geometry. Usually after mirroring, there are usually a few adjustments that you need to make to finish off the model. This is usually playing around with the vertices down the centre to get rid of any creases. I was lucky and hardly had to touch anything which was a bonus. When it came to doing the arm and hand area I wanted to change it a little bit by making the sleeves go over my characters hands to make it look a lit long for him. I did this just to make him a little bit more alien like. I was very pleased with my outcome and when it came to smoothing, the result was perfect. One tiny thing that I came across was that around the hood, the poly edges were flat and not smooth so I had to turn 'Keep Hard Edge' off as shown below.
